INTRODUCTION The goal of this article is to share results and lessons learned from a statewide virtual public high school's start-up phase. An evaluation was designed to help the North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) determine the biggest challenges to its fledgling program, how students and teachers reacted to the experience, whether these reactions varied by the type of course being taken (credit recovery for students needing to retake a course during the summer or accelerated for students seeking challenge), and finally whether there were any lessons learned that could be used to improve the NCVPS experience, as well as inform virtual school efforts in other states.
